    Zero has lost.

A car drives through the Nevada desert.

    length: 2 260 words

post-Safe ending, examining those left behind. dear god, if you get emotional about the protagonists of 999, this is the fic for you. it feels like it could be a deleted scene from the game; the author has captured the games' themes and characters so masterfully! it's a painful kind of closure, and i return to this fic any time i get emotional about the Safe ending.

    useless equations

    Pensysto

He disappeared for a week, is the thing. Up and vanished without telling anyone. When he got back, he brushed off all the worried questions - said there was a family emergency back home, he'd had to hop the soonest flight, no time to tell anyone or email any professors. It should've ended there, everything back to normal.

    The First Nonary Game

    airdeari

A tale of nine children aboard a sinking ship, and the unbelievable story of how they survived.

    length: 20 chapters; 111 512 words

exactly what it says on the tin: an imagining of the first Nonary Game, 9 years before the events of 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. an ambitious concept supremely well-executed. this is one of those fics that kept me awake until the early hours of the morning, reading until my eyes gave out on me. the author does an incredible job melding original ideas with the canon backstory in a compelling manner that never feels gratuitous. it's absolutely bittersweet and heartbreaking knowing everything that's to come for these characters, and some of the twists had me with my hands clapped over my mouth. a thoroughly enjoyable read!!
