webdev resources

tools and resources that i've used in the creation of this webbed site, or might be helpful in the creation of yours!

coding

  • W3Schools - the definitive source of HTML and CSS tutorials. tutorials are comprehensive and very accessible as a complete newbie
  • Codepen - external webpage coding site where code changes are reflected in real-time. legitimately could not work out how to position elements until i started using this lol
  • sadgrl.online - helpful webmaster resources, HTML guides, and layout templates
  • The Cave of Dragonflies (Webmasters guides) - a collection of comprehensive guides on creating and maintaining your own indie website. guides cover a range of topics, from HTML to content writing; while they were written during the earlier days of the indie web, when personal sites were more common, they've been periodically updated over time and are still an incredibly valuable resource! (additionally, The Cave of Dragonflies was (to me, at least) the definitive Pokémon fansite, which i spent hours upon hours on as a kid!)
  • PKLucky's coding resources - coding tutorials and code snippets
  • Graphics Collection - curation of various pixel and coding resources

background, images, and graphics

widgets and fun things

around the web

swag sites off the beaten track

background and ambient noise

  • Animal Crossing hourly music - plays the Animal Crossing hourly tunes in real-time! has the hourly music for all Animal Crossing games, so you can choose your favourite soundtrack
  • myNoise - a library of FREE white noise / ambient noise soundscapes for every purpose you could think of. fantastic for ADHD bitches who need non-distracting background noise to Get Shit Done. i'm a big fan of the Irish Coast personally :3

entertainment

  • kitten game - you are a kitten in a catnip forest
  • randomly-generated rats - which rat will you be today?
  • The Adventures of Bidoof - simple MS Paint comics chronicling the adventures of Bidoof. silly fun! also the source of the infamous 'I'm dying Squirtle' image
  • retro redrawn - re-imagining of beloved games from years gone by. incredible pixel art from a variety of artists, with such a high level of detail and love put into it!
  • youth culture 2000 - Y2K nostalgia that's bound to hit home if you grew up in the early - mid 2000s. highly recommend reading both the zines!
  • uQuiz - user-created personality quizzes. can be a MAJOR timesink
  • Sporcle - user-created quizzes to test your knowledge on basically any topic you can think of! another major timesink, i used to sit up all night playing these with a uni mate :')

creativity

  • The Death Generator - create your own video game screenshots with custom text (not just death screens!)
  • Earthbound Text Generator - generates custom Earthbound text boxes
  • Pokecharms - create your own custom Pokémon trainer card
  • The Creative Independent - vast collection of emotional and practical advice for creatives, by creatives -- whatever your discipline
  • I'm a fucking webmaster - an ode to the importance of webmasters and indie websites
  • Yesterweb.org - a collection of manifestos, zines, and resources regarding the transformation of internet culture. though on an indefinite hiatus, it's nevertheless an excellent resource
  • Nintendo DS shrine - the DS is a wonderful little console that brought joy to so many people, and the author's enthusiasm is evident in every part of the shrine. the level of attention and creativity used to emulate the visuals of the original DS software is a very comforting nostalgia hit :')
  • Mythra Xenoblade 2 shrine - a very loving dedication to a character who often gets overlooked in favour of her counterpart. i love its layout!

archives, museums, collections etc

  • The Internet Archive & Wayback Machine - y'all know what this is. digital library archiving internet pages and digital versions of published works. the Wayback Machine provides a means of viewing archived versions of webpages, allowing access to those that are otherwise defunct.
  • Internet Artifacts - an interactive gallery showcasing the history of the world wide web
  • Web Design Museum - visual archive of old website, software, and app designs / layouts
  • Creative Uncut - concept and official art for a HUGE variety of videogames!
  • Pokencyclopedia - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon portrait sprites! the website at large also has sprites for basically every Pokémon game, but PMD is my one true love so that's the page i'm linking to
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - vintage website advertising the (then) upcoming Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue team games! a neat little snapshot of internet & videogame history that makes me feel like a kid again :')
